In this dissertation, I have investigated several manifestations of word order variation, attempting to propose an analysis that would not resort to optionalityin the grammar. The leading idea has been that free variation does not exist:it arises from the tension between conflicting syntactic and discourse-related constraints.Such conflicts follow from formalisms in which violability of constraints is adopted, such as Optimality Theory (Prince and Smolensky 1993).
