MOCsarebetterknowninlinguisticsastransitivelocativealternations , material â productalternations andinstancesoflogicalmetonymy.Thisdissertationanalysesthesethreetypesofargument alternationsasmetonymy â based.Thefocusoftheanalysisisthereforeonthecontiguityrelation betweenthedifferentpossibledirectobjects.Inallcases , itisthisrelationwhichunderliesand restrictsthepossibilityofchangingadirectobject . AqualitativeanalysisofcorpusdataisusedtoexamineMOCsinDutchandGerman.Thismakesthis studycorpus â oriented.TheinterpretationofMOCsismodelledinaframesemanticapproach . ThisdissertationnotonlyexaminesandclarifiestheconceptofMOCbyanalysingalargenumberof data â whichcouldbeusefulfromalexicographicalperspective â , butitalsoprovidestheoretical insightsintothephenomenonofmetonymyingeneral .
