MOCsarebetterknowninlinguisticsastransitivelocativealternations , material ‐ productalternations andinstancesoflogicalmetonymy.Thisdissertationanalysesthesethreetypesofargument alternationsasmetonymy ‐ based.Thefocusoftheanalysisisthereforeonthecontiguityrelation betweenthedifferentpossibledirectobjects.Inallcases , itisthisrelationwhichunderliesand restrictsthepossibilityofchangingadirectobject . AqualitativeanalysisofcorpusdataisusedtoexamineMOCsinDutchandGerman.Thismakesthis studycorpus ‐ oriented.TheinterpretationofMOCsismodelledinaframesemanticapproach . ThisdissertationnotonlyexaminesandclarifiestheconceptofMOCbyanalysingalargenumberof data ‐ whichcouldbeusefulfromalexicographicalperspective ‐ , butitalsoprovidestheoretical insightsintothephenomenonofmetonymyingeneral .
